Terrorists Threaten To Bomb University Of Ibadan,For Making The List Of World's Top 1000 Varsities

Recently, there was confusion at UI, following the circulation ‎of a letter purportedly written to all staff by al-wilayat al-Islamiyya Gharb Afriqiyyah, a Boko Haram group, threatening to wreak monumental havoc through ceaseless bombings of the institution, beginning from today.
According to the message, the group said that students and staff were their targets. The university’s sin is that it is first in the country that brought in and entrenched western education.

While some lecturers got the mail through their institutional e-mail addresses, others were copied through social platforms such as WhatsApp to share the letter. In the alleged mail, the group said: You people are an embarrassment to Nigeria and are the people that brought in western education to Nigeria. .

You doomed this nation and in turn you all are going to be doomed. Most of you are going to die before Independence Day. You will not spend the Independence Day in peace, you and your students.
Detonation will start going from tomorrow till Independence Day and there is nothing you can do as we are among you. Even your little searches at the gate won’t do anything. By the time we are through with you, your government will be sorry.”

Security has been strengthened at the university gates with scanning and ‘stop and search’ being carried out. Police Public Relations Officer of the state police command, Adekunle Ajisebutu, said the command had received the information and had responded appropriately.

This is coming few days after the university made the list of top universities in the world . Often described as the nation’s premier university, UI is ranked 600thout of the world’s top 1,000 institutions of higher learning. The list, which was published by the Times Higher Education, ranks universities based on such criteria as teaching, citations of scholarly publications, research, industry income, and international outlook. Of the 22 Universities from Africa represented on it, the University of Ibadan was the sole Nigerian higher institution featured. Universities from South Africa and Egypt accounted for much of the African representation.

Times Higher Education had a number of positive things to say about Nigeria’s oldest university- it’s zoological and botanical gardens, home to several endangered species; a functioning distance learning center; a media resource center offering educational workshops and consultancies; and facilities such as gyms, cafes, and common rooms. UI is said to have the largest postgraduate school in Africa- postgraduate students make up about half of its total student population
